Calm, Cool, and Collected- Staying Cool in Summer

Calm, Cool, and Collected- Staying Cool in Summer

While Minnesotans are grateful for summer, the extreme heat can be a problem before we get used to it. Heat exhaustion follows heat cramps and precedes heatstroke, which can be dangerous without proper treatment.  Signs of heatstroke include:

  • cool skin and goosebumps, even in the heat,
  • faintness
  • dizziness
  • muscle cramps.

The best ways to treat and prevent heatstroke are simple and easy. Make sure to wear loose, lightweight clothes to allow the body to regulate itself.

Staying hydrated is also an essential factor. Make sure to drink plenty of water or sports drinks or coconut water.

Finally, try to schedule outdoor activities for morning or evening to avoid the most extreme heat. Going for a walk after dinner or enjoying morning coffee outside are great ways to start and end a day.
